Climate Story Lab Amazônia 2025

Building a pan-Amazonian network of cooperation, exchange, and education means creating a vibrant, living space where communities can tell their own stories, valuing expressions of identity that stem from ancestry, community, and traditional ways of life. Culture thus asserts itself as a vector of transformation, strengthening narratives that, when shared, offer creative and concrete alternatives for addressing the climate emergency.

Matapi enhances this journey, pointing to new possibilities for circulation, distribution, and the economy, charting market routes that engage deeply with Amazonian diversity. It is an invitation to rethink economic models, connecting indigenous identity, community, and innovation.

This is an audiovisual initiative that recognizes the territory as its greatest strength, capable of opening challenging paths for training, development, and commercialization. A movement that decolonizes traditional economic structures, which historically silenced or marginalized these voices, allowing current, diverse, and urgent narratives to gain the space and reach they deserve.

From October 16 to 19, the Floresta Ativa Experimental Center (CEFA) in Alter do Chão (PA) will host a major gathering of audiovisual training projects, organizations, and collectives from across the Amazon region! Over the course of the four-day event, in line with the global debate—especially in the run-up to COP-30 in the Brazilian Amazon—we will bring together representatives from various countries across the Pan-Amazon region to discuss ways to expand the audiovisual market in the region and to debate how models of commercialization, distribution, and exhibition of works relate to climate and environmental issues.

Learnings from the Amazon

The eighth edition of Matapi – Mercado Audiovisual das Amazônias, in its special Climate Story Lab Amazônia edition, embraced an immersive and collaborative format - bringing together a group of artists, producers, communicators, and cultural organizers in Alter do Chão/Santarém. This lab marked the beginning of a new phase of Pan-Amazonian collaboration focused on strengthening Amazonian audiovisual narratives, self-representation, and responses to climate emergencies.
Collectively, we developed a strategic document that includes a map of the participants’ expertise, a protocol of intent outlining objectives and modes of collaboration, and a joint action plan for circulation, cooperation, and audiovisual co-production. The document stands as both an affirmation and a formalization of the commitment established among the organizations, and political stance regarding the non-negotiable principles guiding audiovisual narratives and practices in our territories. We want to foster a more strategic presence that extends beyond borders, always grounded in collective agreements. The collaborative network born from this lab will launch during COP-30, in Belém do Pará.
It is within culture that we find solutions — from Indigenous peoples, traditional communities, and collectives that persist and resist, we continue to open up narrative pathways to respond to the challenges of climate justice.
This gathering marked an important turning point for the region’s audiovisual sector — renewing partnerships, opening new paths, and deepening our purpose. Beyond being a market, this edition reaffirmed Matapi as a platform for articulation and connection among the Amazons.
We can only build a network when we recognize ourselves in one another — as active participants committed to making this network exist, cooperate, and grow.
